The purpose of BEP is: 

To provide strategic leadership on environmental and sustainability issues to:
 

• Promote a low carbon economy and lifestyle in the city
• Assist the City to achieve a 60% carbon reduction target by 2026
• Increase resource efficiency and reduce waste
• Enhance the quality of the local environment
• Be prepared for and adapt to climate change
• Enhance green infrastrucutre and protect and promote biodiversity and the natural environment

To report progress on Birmingham's 2026 priorities to Be Birmingham on the following specific outcomes.   

• Through the best use of environmental technologies, a vibrant low carbon, low waste economy is created which ensures Birmingham is prepared for the impact of climate change
• Cleaner, greener, sustainable neighbourhoods are secured and citizens are empowered to take greater responsibility for their environment

BEP has established six Delivery Groups to achieve the above: 

• Low Carbon Transport Delivery Group
• Low Carbon Buildings Delivery Group
• Low Carbon Energy Generation Delivery Group
• Green Infrastructure & Adaptation Delivery Group
• Resource Efficiency & Waste Delivery Group
• Clean City Delivery Group
